Favourites | Favourite read of 2014

I can’t believe that 2014 is up. This year actually went really fast for me and I’m sad to leave it behind. This year, I read some amazing books. In total I read 36 books, which beat my Goodreads challenge of 30.

Instead of just listing my favourite book of the year, (because there are too many of them,) I want to give recognition to books that were excellent reads. So below are books that I feel are the best in their category, that I read throughout 2014. Click the image of the book to read my review about it.

how_to_build_a_girl_caitlin_moran

How to Build a Girl by Caitlin Moran

This book surprised me when I read it. It was the complete opposite of what I expected, so it wasn’t a disappointment because it was interesting to read. However, although the character is young, this is a more mature book.

I rated it 4 stars out of 5.

How to Build a Girl by Caitlin Moran is a coming of age novel that follows a 14-year-old girl called Johanna, as she attempts to re-create herself after being embarrassed publicly on national television.

Synopsis

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell is a novel about the experiences of young love from two different people.

************************************

Review

This was a simple, easy and enjoyable read. It is told through the duel perspectives of Eleanor and Park. I liked the style of writing, especially the short chapters. The back and forth perspectives was interesting, it kept it exciting for me while I got caught up with the story between the two.

I have to say that I did prefer the beginning more then the rest of the book, but I loved the simplicity of it. I especially liked the growth in friendship between the two, even before they had said a word to each other. It was cute and reminded me of that innocent and sweet young love.

The book and film references in this book as Rainbow Rowell does in all her books were fun. I loved it when I knew what particular reference she was referring to.

Park’s dad Jamie was hilarious, he definitely is my favourite dad character, he made me laugh with everything he said. I would quote some of it, but I don’t want this post to be a spoiler (page 138, 139, 145).

This book was a great fun and a cute read, so it is definitely a 4.5 star book.

The protagonist is a 14 year old girl, which I think wouldn’t be a problem to me if she was around 17, 18 years old. This is my personal feeling so another reader may not have a problem with it.

Wrap Up | July READS

This month I read a total eight books. Two of these were library books and the rest are books that I own. Below is a more detail description of each book that I read.

fangirl_rainbow_rowell

Fangirl – Rainbow Rowell

I read this book in June, but it crossed over into July as I finished it then.

This book was amazing! I rated it a 4 on Goodreads.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell is a contemporary novel following two identical twins starting out at university, or college as it is referred to in other places.

Throughout the twin’s lives, they have always been and done things together. That is until Wren wants to separate herself from Cath so that she can be considered as an individual away from her twin. Cath who is not as social as Wren, has to overcome her social anxieties to experience college life without the comfort and safety of her other half.

this_is_not_my_hat_jon_klassen

This is Not My Hat – Jon Klassen

I saw this book in the library. I was attracted to the illustrations that I believe was drawn by the author. This is a cute children’s book about a fish that finds a hat, which belongs to another fish.

I rated this book 4 stars on Goodreads, and I would recommend this as a book to be read to young children.

the_cuckoos_calling_Robert_galbraith_jkrowling_cormoran_strike

The Cuckoo’s Calling – Robert Galbraith

I wanted to read this because of the sequel that has just been released. I don’t read detective novels but I wanted to give this one a go because of all the reviews that I’ve read. I’m glad I read it because I loved it. I rated it 3.5 stars on Goodreads.

The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith (pseudonym for J.K. Rowling) is a crime fiction novel that follows a private detective that is hired to investigate the mysterious suicide of the countries favourite supermodel Lula Landry. But as he delves further into this investigation, things appear not as they seem.

the_knife_of_never_letting_go_patrick_ness_chaos_walking

The Knife Of Never Letting Go – Patrick Ness

I loved this book, everything about it was gripping and exciting. I can only give this book praises because Patrick Ness did a spectacular job and creating a story. I can’t wait until I read the Ask of Asking, which is the next book in the series. I have to continue this next month, because it’s ending left me wanting to find out what happens next. I have to know.

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness follows Todd, the youngest boy in a town full of men. It is a town where everyone’s thoughts are not their own. Everyone can hear the noise of everyone’s thoughts, which Todd has had to live with since he was born.

In a few months, he is meant to turn 13 where he would be officially considered a man. But things are not a clear as they seem, and soon Todd’s life is turned upside down, and he is forced to flee his hometown, to enter an unknown world, with only his loyal dog for company. It is on this journey, that Todd discovers who he is, and the truth to all the lies that he has been told.

elizabeth_is_missing_emma_healey

Elizabeth Is Missing  – Emma Healey

I never planned to pick this book up this month, but the synopsis to it was really good, that I couldn’t resist not buying it. I rated this book 4 stars of Goodreads.

Elizabeth is Missing by Emma Healey is her debut novel. It follows Maud who is an elderly lady in her 80s. She suffers from memory loss so she easily forgets things such as making a cup of tea, her daughter coming to visit her or if she’s cooking a meal. There is one thing however that Maud doesn’t forget, and that is her friend Elizabeth is missing. It is up to Maud to battle with her memory loss, to solve the mysterious disappearance of her friend.  A disappearance that no one else believes.

mouse_bird_snake_wolf_david_almond

Mouse Bird Snake Wolf – David Amond

This is a children’s book, which follows three children who try and create more creatures and bring them into the world. This is because all the Gods are tired from creating the whole world, so are busy relaxing and congratulating themselves for their achievements. Although trouble soon finds it’s way to them.

landline_rainbow_rowell

Review

When I started to read Landline, the only thing I knew about this novel, was that a woman manages to speak to her husband from the past. The idea seemed interesting to me, so I decided that I wanted to see what it was about.

The writing style and dialogue was amazing, it was done extremely well. It was one of my favourite parts and all the references to other books and films such as Back to the Future. (If you’ve never seen that film, please check it out. It’s mind-blowing.) Plus I completely forgot about animaniacs, ahh childhood memories, that was a great time.

Anyway, I remember while reading Landline, I found it funny and cute and a light and easy read.  I enjoyed reading this book; the characters were written well that they became their own person. My favourite characters in this book would have to be Heather, Seth and Neal. Heather was a joy to read and I understood Neal as a person. Georgie was a great character too, but she became annoying to me, especially when she would sit by the phone waiting for her husband to call, but I don’t want to say too much to spoil it.

There was a part where I related to Georgie in the bra scene. I loved reading this, because I have shared those same bra issues as her. The underwire coming out and poking me and the underwire getting caught in the washing machine. I’m sure I laughed when I heard that part.

Overall I found this an enjoyable read, so I would rate this 3.5 stars after giving it much thought.

Current Reads

Currently I’m reading A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. I started this around a while ago, and I still haven’t got past the first 100 pages.  So far A Man Called Ove is really interesting and funny in parts. The story was not what I expected, and is more originally to how I assumed the book would be played out. I really like Ove, I love reading about grumpy people in books, they always end up being really funny. I’ve wanted to read more, but I’ve found myself busier than other weeks. I find this slightly annoying as I wanted to participate in the Under-hyped readathon that is on from the 21st July to the 27th. But being unsuccessful in my reading so far, I’ve decided to pull out.

I’m hoping to read a bit more this weekend where I’ll try and find more time to pick up this.

Emma_jane_austen_audiobookCurrent AudioBook

This is section is new for me, because I don’t usually listen to audiobooks. The last time I did was around 2003 where I listened to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. That audio book was amazing as Stephen Fry did an amazing job, that for a while I considered no other audiobook to be as worthy.

Right now I’m listening to Emma by Jane Austen, which is read by Juliet Stevenson. I’ve always wanted to read the book, but I’ve never managed to get to it. I decided to borrow the audiobook from the library because then I could listen to it when I was unable to read. I have no idea what chapter I’m on, but I know I’m on the second disk now. So far I’m enjoying it really well, I just wish that Juliet Stevenson’s voice was more exciting and gripping. I find myself drifting off in thought, and then having to rewind it back in order to re-listen to the section that I’ve missed.

Future Reads

Once I’ve completed A Man Called Ove, I plan to read The Night Guest by Fiona McFarlane. This was on my TBR for the under-hyped Readathon, so I’ll definitely be picking it up. That is if I feel in my current mood. I have realized that my mood may change depending on how the book ends, and if I need to cheer myself up with some light reading comedy.

Book Haul EXTRAVAGANZA | July BOOKS

hannah_loves_to_read_july_haul

These are all the books that I got in July. I didn’t buy that many books this month, the majority being new releases and library books.

landline_rainbow_rowellLandline – Rainbow Rowell

I pre-ordered this and it arrived on its release date. I was so happy when it arrived and I’m really excited to get started on this. The hardcover is really beautiful. I love the UK edition much more then the USA one. I’m really glad I got this.

vicious_ve_schwab

Vicious – V.E. Schwab

I picked this book up along with Landline from Amazon. I hope to read this this month, but with the amount of books that I have to read on my TBR, this may not be possible.

elizabeth_is_missing_emma_healey

Elizabeth is Missing – Emma Healey

How can anyone not love a plot about a lady (with what I believe is dementia), insisting that her friend Elizabeth is missing that no one believes. It reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock’s film The Lady Vanishes, where no one believes the young lady when she notices that Miss Froy has disappeared.

I loved the plot to the film so I know I’m going to love this also.

I got this half price as a new released hardback and it’s my current read at the moment. I’m around 30 pages in, and loving it.

how_to_build_a_girl_caitlin_moran

How to Build a Girl – Caitlin Moran

I saw this for half price in WHSmiths. It’s coming of age story seems perfect for me. I love watching films in this genre, so I know I’ll love reading about it to. I’m actually considering looking for more coming of age books. If you know any that you’ve liked, let me know in the comments.

mouse_bird_snake_wolf_david_almond

Mouse Bird Snake Wolf – David Almond

I was putting books away in the library, and I came across this Junior Graphic novel. I haven’t read what it’s about, but I looked through some of the pages and it looked really interesting. Plus it’s super short to read.

a_man_called_ove_fredrik_backman

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

I read the plot to this and had to buy it. I got it for half price at £7.49, which to me is very pricey, but I really wanted this in. I can’t wait to get started on this one, I heard it’s funny.

wuthering_heights_the_graphic_novel_john_m_burns

Wuthering Heights: The Graphic Novel by John M. Burns

I saw this in the library, and thought that I’d have another go at reading a graphic novel. I’ve read and watched the film of Wuthering Heights, so it’ll be very interesting to see another adaption of this amazing book.

I might read this along side my current read, because even though I don’t read more that one book at a time, I feel that graphic novels are different to novels.

finding_sky_benedicts_joss_stirling stealing_phoenix_benedicts_joss_stirlingseeking_crystal_benedicts-joss_stirling

Finding Sky, Stealing Phoenix, Seeking Crystal by Joss Stirling

I don’t usually shop in TKMaxx, but I’d heard that they sold books that were low price. I discovered the Finding Sky trilogy for the great price of £3.99. I checked the rating on Goodreads, and it was really good. I always make an effort to check ratings before I buy, because although the price of a book may be cheap, if the ratings low, I won’t buy it.

I’m not sure when I’ll dive into this one, but I’m hoping after I complete a few books further up on my to be read list, I’ll get to this one.

this_is_not_my_hat_jon_klassen

This is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen

A children’s book that I found in the library. I liked the illustrations, so I borrowed it to read to my niece.

Emma_jane_austen_audiobook

Emma by Jane Austen and read by Juliet Stevenson

I’ve wanted to read this book for ages, but I’ve never seemed to get round to it. I found this audiobook in the library and thought that I’d listen to it instead.

the_woman_in_black_susan_hill

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

This is another book that I got from the library. I loved the film adaption to the woman in black, so I can’t wait to get on to this one very soon.

What books have you got this month?
